Questions
What is hydroponic green fodder?
Barley sprouted in trays without soil, using only water and light. After seven days it is harvested as a green mat of leaves and roots that animals eat whole.
Which animals is it for?
Dairy and beef cattle, camels and horses, sheep and goats, and poultry. Green fodder is part of the daily ration, and we recommend setting the ration with your nutritionist.
How much water does it use?
5 litres or less per kg of green fodder, against more than 100 litres for field-grown fodder.
What does the unit need on site?
A level base, a water line, a drain and a power supply. The FC-50 cabinet sits under a shade or indoors and runs on 220 V.
Is installation included?
Yes. The unit is delivered ready, and we commission it and grow the first crop with your operator.
Does it grow barley only?
No. Barley is the most common choice because it is fast, available and inexpensive, and the unit also sprouts maize, sorghum, wheat, legumes and clover, as well as blends of several seeds for a higher protein content. Each seed behaves differently in soaking and germination, so the controller holds a separate growing programme for each one: soaking time, irrigation rate and frequency, lighting hours, temperature and humidity, and cycle length. You select the programme that matches the seed in front of you and the unit runs it, and several programmes can run on different tiers at the same time. We hand the unit over tuned to the seed available in your area, and add further programmes whenever you need them.
Standard units and custom builds
The FC-50 and FC-500 are the two most requested units and arrive ready to run. When your herd sits between the two sizes, or above them, we build the unit to your farm: output, space, level of control and water treatment.
